Who we are and what we do
Glasgow University Chapel Choir comprises between 28 and 32 auditioned singers of mixed voices (S.A.T.B.) - a combination of volunteers, choral exhibitioners and professional Lay Clerks. In addition to the 11 funded choral awards, all members of the choir receive free singing tuition.
The choir is directed by James Grossmith, who is also Chorus Master of Scottish Opera. They are accompanied by the University Organist, the renowned British recitalist Kevin Bowyer, and the University Organ Scholar, Ross Luescher.
The principal function of the Chapel Choir is to sing at services held in the University Chapel at 11.00am on various Sundays, and at 5:30pm on various Tuesdays during term. A 75-minute rehearsal precedes the Sunday services, and there is a 2-hour general rehearsal every Sunday afternoon. During term, the Choir sings at a number of weddings (usually on a Saturday) in the Chapel.
As well as singing in the University, the Chapel Choir gives regular radio broadcasts and concerts, and has recorded several CDs.
In the summer, there is often a tour abroad and in July 2009, the Choir visited Tuscany.
Chapel Choir choristers enjoy a varied social life together outside the commitments of their work. New members are actively encouraged to become involved with all aspects of the Choir’s life as well as its music-making.
Auditions for prospective members are normally held in late September and early October of each year, but enquiries are welcome at any time of the year. For further information please contact the Director of Chapel Music, James Grossmith, by clicking on the link below.
